Data Converter
Convert digital data storage units instantly. Calculate values between bits, bytes, kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB).
Conversion Formula
Divide the Byte value by 1024 to get Kilobyte.
Digital Storage & Memory
Data measurement determines how much digital information a file, hard drive, or memory stick can hold. At the lowest level, all digital data is stored as a bit (a binary digit representing a 0 or a 1).
The Base-2 vs Base-10 Confusion
There is often confusion around data storage sizes because there are two coexisting standards:
- Binary (Base-2): Used by software and operating systems (like Windows). Under this system, each step up is a multiple of 1,024. For example, 1 Kilobyte = 1,024 bytes. (Properly called Kibibytes).
- Decimal (Base-10): Used by hardware manufacturers selling hard drives or flash drives. Under this system, each step is a multiple of 1,000. For example, 1 Kilobyte = 1,000 bytes.
This discrepancy is why a "1 Terabyte" hard drive you purchase only shows up as ~931 Gigabytes when plugged into a Windows computer!
Data Hierarchy (Binary)
- 1 Byte (B) = 8 Bits
- 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 Bytes
- 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 Kilobytes
- 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 Megabytes
- 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 Gigabytes
- 1 Petabyte (PB) = 1,024 Terabytes
How Our Tool Works
The Data Converter provides real-time, bi-directional conversion. As soon as you type a number in the "From" input, the result instantly appears in the "To" field. You can easily reverse the conversion direction by clicking the Swap icon in the center. We also automatically generate a quick reference table based on your selected units to help you memorize common conversions.
