Planning for Your Final Exam

Knowing exactly what score you need on your final helps you study smarter. Whether you need to ace it or simply pass, this calculator gives you a clear target to work toward.

The Formula

Required Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight

Example

If your current grade is 82%, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 30%:

Required = (90 - 82 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (90 - 57.4) / 0.30 = 108.7%

In this case, you'd need 108.7% - which means achieving exactly 90% through the final alone isn't possible. You'd need extra credit or to adjust your target to something like 85%.

FAQ

The formula is: Needed = (Desired - Current × (1 - FinalWeight)) / FinalWeight. This accounts for how much your current grade contributes and how much the final exam needs to make up the difference.
If the calculator shows you need more than 100%, achieving your desired grade through the final alone isn't mathematically possible. You may need to look into extra credit opportunities or adjust your target.
Check your school's LMS (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) or use our Grade Calculator to compute your current grade from individual assignments. Most systems show your running percentage.
If your final exam replaces a low test score, first recalculate your current grade without that test, then increase the final's weight to include both the final's weight and the replaced test's weight.
Final exams typically count for 20–40% of the total course grade. Some cumulative finals may be worth up to 50%. Check your syllabus for the exact weight.
