Understanding GPA
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized way to measure academic achievement. On the 4.0 scale used by most American colleges, each letter grade corresponds to a specific number of grade points.
The GPA Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours)

FAQ
GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours. Quality points for each course equal the grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.) multiplied by credit hours. For example, an A in a 4-credit course = 16 quality points.
A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5+ is very good, and 3.7+ is excellent. Dean's List typically requires 3.5+, and honors graduation usually requires 3.5–3.9 depending on the school.
Semester GPA includes only the current term's courses. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across all terms. Enter your previous cumulative GPA and credit hours in the optional section to calculate your updated cumulative GPA.
Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale, though some use different systems. Some schools include A+ (4.3), while others cap at 4.0. Weighted high school GPAs can exceed 4.0 due to honors/AP course bonuses.
Pass/fail courses typically do not affect GPA. A 'Pass' earns credit hours but no quality points, so it's excluded from the GPA calculation. A 'Fail' may or may not affect GPA depending on school policy.
