How Course Grades Are Calculated

Keeping track of your grades throughout the semester is crucial for academic success. It prevents end-of-term surprises and helps you identify which classes require more study time. Course grading systems generally fall into two mathematical models: the Simple (Points-Based) system and the Weighted (Category-Based) system.

The Simple Grade Formula (Unweighted)

In a points-based class, every point is equal, regardless of where it came from. Your final grade is simply the total points you earned divided by the total points possible:

Grade % = (Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible) × 100
  • Example: You scored 45/50 on a test, 9/10 on homework, and 90/100 on a project. Total earned: 144. Total possible: 160. Grade = (144 ÷ 160) × 100 = 90% (A-).

The Weighted Grade Formula

In a weighted class, assignments are grouped into categories, and each category is assigned a percentage of your final grade. The formula multiplies your average in each category by that category's weight:

Grade % = Σ (Category Average × Category Weight)
  • Example: Homework is 20%, Quizzes are 30%, Exams are 50%.
  • You average 100% on Homework (1.0 × 20 = 20 points).
  • You average 80% on Quizzes (0.80 × 30 = 24 points).
  • You average 70% on Exams (0.70 × 50 = 35 points).
  • Final Grade = 20 + 24 + 35 = 79% (C+).

An unweighted grade (or 'points-based' grade) treats all points equally. A 50-point test is simply worth five 10-point homework assignments. A weighted grade separates assignments into categories (e.g., Exams 50%, Homework 30%, Participation 20%). In a weighted system, a small 10-point exam might impact your final grade much more than a 100-point homework assignment.
Most US high schools and universities use a standard scale: A (90-100%), B (80-89%), C (70-79%), D (60-69%), and F (below 60%). Many institutions use plus/minus modifiers where, for example, 87-89% is a B+ and 90-92% is an A-. Always check your specific course syllabus for the exact grading scale.
