How Grades Are Calculated

Your course grade is typically calculated using either a simple average of all assignments or a weighted average where different categories (tests, homework, projects) count for different percentages of your final grade.

Weighted Grade Formula

Grade = Σ(score_i / max_i × weight_i) / Σ(weight_i) × 100

Simple Grade Formula

Grade = (Total Points Earned / Total Points Possible) × 100

FAQ

A weighted grade accounts for the relative importance of each assignment. For example, a final exam worth 30% of your grade has more impact than a homework assignment worth 5%. Use the 'Weighted' mode to enter different weights.
The standard US grading scale is: A (90–100%), B (80–89%), C (70–79%), D (60–69%), F (below 60%). Some schools use +/- modifiers, such as A- (90–92%) and B+ (87–89%).
In 'Simple' mode, grades are calculated based on total points earned divided by total possible points. This naturally accounts for different point values - a 50-point test counts more than a 10-point quiz.
Yes. Add extra credit as an assignment with the bonus points as the score and 0 as the max score. In weighted mode, assign it a small weight. This will push your grade above 100% proportionally.
Enter only the assignments you've completed. Your current grade reflects only submitted work. To see how future assignments will affect your grade, add them with estimated scores.
