Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely adopted screening tool used to categorize a person's weight relative to their height. Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful population-level screening tool, it has several important limitations when applied to individuals:

  • Muscle vs. Fat: BMI does not distinguish between muscle weight and fat weight. Bodybuilders and athletes often have BMIs in the overweight or obese ranges despite being extremely healthy and having low body fat.
  • Fat Distribution: It cannot tell where fat is stored. Visceral fat (fat stored around the internal organs in the abdomen) is much more dangerous than subcutaneous fat (fat stored under the skin). Two people with the same BMI can have very different risk profiles.
  • Age and Bone Density: Older adults tend to lose muscle mass and bone density. Therefore, an elderly person may have a "normal" BMI while actually carrying a dangerously high percentage of body fat.
  • Alternative Metrics: For a more complete picture of your health, BMI should be used alongside other metrics like Waist Circumference, Body Fat Percentage, and Waist-to-Hip Ratio.
