Understanding CGPA and Percentage Conversion
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a widely used academic grading system that measures a student's overall academic performance across multiple semesters or years. While CGPA is excellent for internal evaluation, many employers, competitive exams (like CAT, UPSC), and foreign universities require academic records to be submitted as percentages. Because there is no universal mathematical rule for this conversion, different Indian educational boards and universities have defined their own official formulas.
Common Indian University Formulas
Below are the official conversion formulas for some of the most prominent educational boards and universities in India:
- CBSE (Class 10): The Central Board of Secondary Education
uses a straightforward multiplier.
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 - VTU (Karnataka): Visvesvaraya Technological University
subtracts a factor before multiplying.
Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 - Mumbai University (MU): MU uses a tiered calculation.
If CGPA < 7:Percentage = (7.25 × CGPA) + 11
If CGPA ≥ 7:Percentage = (7.1 × CGPA) + 12 - Anna University (Tamil Nadu): Simple multiplication by
10 on their 10-point scale.
Percentage = CGPA × 10 - APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU):
Percentage = 10 × CGPA - 3.75
SGPA vs CGPA
It is important to differentiate between SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and CGPA. SGPA is your performance metric for a single semester, calculated by dividing the total credit points earned in a semester by the total credits registered in that semester. CGPA is the weighted average of all your SGPAs across your entire academic program. When applying for jobs or degrees, institutions almost exclusively ask for the final CGPA conversion, not individual SGPA conversions.
What to do if your University isn't listed?
If your university does not have a stated conversion formula on the back of your mark sheet or in the official student handbook, the standard practice (for a 10-point scale) is to multiply the CGPA by 10. However, you should always contact your university's examination controller office to request an official "CGPA to Percentage Conversion Certificate." Many foreign universities and rigorous Indian institutions (like IIMs) require this physical certificate to validate your claimed percentage during the admissions process.
